The Power of Vintage Inspired Branding

Have you ever looked back at your old Pinterest boards? Did you shudder at the ghosts of your 12 y/o wedding inspiration too?? No, just me? Cool.

When I got my first Pinterest account I became slightly OBSESSED with the constant stream of creative ideas that were just a search away. I remember once attempting an “alternative” pumpkin design I’d seen by blow drying crayons on a pumpkin effectively spraying all of my mom’s kitchen wall in the colorful wax. (I told her not to worry it would pop right off! I was very wrong as the paint came off before that wax did.)

Other than the countless Pinterest fails I stumbled across some of my first graphic design inspiration! They were great around 2012 but not much past then. The trendy pastels, geometric grid style, and bouncy script font were thriving at the time but have since fallen out of style.

Here are just a few examples of my wonderfully 2012 pins–

As a brand designer I get to meet with talented business owners and am generally rebranding from a once trendy logo the majority of the time.

A brand that was created out of a trend is one that will require a rebrand.

One of the core values of Of Lilies & Fields is timeless design. Design that stands the test of time and trends. Branding that doesn’t require another investment for another rebrand in 3-5 years.

One of the best ways to have a timeless brand is vintage inspired branding.
Don’t get me wrong, purely vintage branding doesn’t serve ever businesses goals but I think vintage inspired branding sure does.
A good rule of thumb is if it looks good from 50 years ago it will most likely look good 50 years from now.

Notice any of these?

The logos above are all vintage inspired logos. Have they gotten a facelift or two since the start of the businesses they represent? Yes, but the overall look of the logos has stood the test of time.

Though they are all different, they have a timeless feel to them without an overtly trend-based stylization. Constant rebrands that are the effects of trend based design are not only expensive AND a headache for businesses to execute, but it forces you to build brand recognition over and over again.

If you are a business in need of a rebrand or a business starting out, I encourage you to opt for a vintage inspired brand!
Need some more inspiration? We are constantly pinning logos, brand sets, and illustrations to our Pinterest that are vintage inspired and timeless for a wide variety of businesses.

Here are two collections for you to take a look at!

Design Inspo This includes more modern iterations of timeless design.

Vintage Design The majority of this collection is genuine vintage design to see how certain fonts and layouts have lasted through the years.

As always–

Happy Branding!
